Financial Forecasting for Executive Directors

This session is a partnership with Mike Travis. Mike is one of our board members at NAWA and is an accountant in Spokane who primarily serves nonprofit organizations. He has helped our organization grow immensely in our understanding of key financial activities, policies, and actions. One area that executive directors often need more help in is around financial forecasting. These recent challenging times for nonprofits have shown how important it is for organizations to have contingency plans and to have had some preparation for challenges.

The primary learning goals for this session would be:

Understand how to use financial data for strategic decision-making

Learn key financial indicators and what they reveal about organizational health

Know how to engage boards and staff in financial discussions

Gain confidence in leading financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting

Neal Mizushima

Neal proudly serves as executive director at Nonprofit Association of Washington. With decades of experience in the nonprofit sector, he has a proven record of designing and implementing programs that effectively address community challenges, advocating for change at the city and state level, providing transformational learning opportunities around leadership, trauma-informed approach, change management, and equitable and inclusive practices. Neal has focused on building the systems, policies, procedures, culture, and capacity to serve the community in the most effective and equitable ways possible. With experience in small, medium, and large nonprofits at various stages of growth, Neal is energized by working with the vast array of nonprofits that serve Washington.

Michael Travis

Michael is a Spokane native with nearly 15 years of experience in audit and assurance, consulting, and controller-ship. He has worked with organizations ranging from grassroots nonprofits with annual revenues of $500,000 to publicly traded companies with multi-billion-dollar market capitalizations. His career has shaped a broad skill set and a process-driven approach to solving financial and operational challenges across sectors.

Michael is the founder of Spokane Accounting Services, a firm providing fractional financial leadership to nonprofits and small to mid-sized enterprises. He also serves as a member at large for the Boys and Girls Club of Spokane County.

A proud Inland Northwest native, Michael grew up in Coeur d’Alene and graduated cum laude from Gonzaga University.
