Breakups are awkward, painful, and uncomfortable, whether they are romantic or with a volunteer or board relationship at your nonprofit organization. It’s never easy to part ways. Too often, we think “My board member and volunteer are giving their (and in most cases, money) I couldn’t possibly ask them to leave. I’m just so thankful they are involved.”

Did you catch that? Yes, board members ARE volunteers, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t hold them accountable and have certain expectations.
